Meyertech Ref. 06-10 Up close and personal with the ZVK-22D
Created by: Marketing

Meyertech recently launched its replacement for the ZVK-002D - the ZVK-22D. So this month we thought we would take a closer look at it as we get 'up close and personal'.

Around half the size of its sibling, the ZVK-77D, the ZVK-22D completes the current keyboard line-up for the ZoneVu product family. Designed primarily as an 'operator' keyboard as opposed to its bigger brother 'system' keyboard the ZVK-22D is none-the-less packed with features and indeed incorporates many of the key functions found on the more expensive ZVK-77D.

Installation - Plug & ?

We have all experienced plug & play inconvenience which more often than not becomes plug & pray !
We believe that even the most non-technical will find the ZVK-22D installation a 'doddle'.

The keyboard comes supplied with a 12VDC PSU incorporating a universal power input which doesn't mind what it is connected to as long as it is somewhere between 100 and 230VAC. The 12VDC output can either be plugged directly into the rear panel of the ZVK-22D or alternatively into a JB in which case power is fed to the keyboard via the ZoneVu Port ( 7-pin DIN connector) which also incorporates the data connections.

One trap to be aware of is only using a 2-pair screened cable and using the screen for both 0VDC and ground screen. DON'T DO IT ! We can guarantee it will work 'on the bench' but in the field it could cause major problems due to earth potential differences, so why gamble, install a 3-pair cable and use the spare pair for 0VDC.

The ZVK-22D connects to the ZoneVu network by the now familiar RS422 format and requires only three parameters configuring before you get up and running:

1. Set the MAC address.
2. Set the network line termination to either on or off.
3. Set the mode of operation to either Standalone or Network.

Ergonomically Speaking

Sit down in front of the ZVK-22D and you realise just how compact it is compared to the 77D.

So what has been compromised ?

Well actually not a lot and one could even argue that ergonomically it has been improved due to the neutral positioning of the proportional joystick making it easily adaptable to both left and right handed users. Granted the LCD (which conveys system information to the operator) is smaller and there are less soft-keys to access the menu driven display than the ZVK-77D but overall all the keys and functions a 77D user is familiar with are all present and correct on the 22D. The keys are even the same full-travel, quality keys as used on the 77D.

What Can it Do ?

  • Control cameras and domes
  • Control DVR's and VCR's
  • DVR Search and Goto
  • Select Multiplexer screen formats
  • Provide basic alarm management
  • Control video matrices
  • Control external relay devices
  • Program camera presets, patrols and mimics, 999 presets plus Home
  • Support up to 49 users
  • Create Zonal matrix switches
  • Back-up its configuration to a PC using Mpower
  • Variable speed PTZFI control
  • Automatic time-out user log-off
  • Global facilities
  • Camera colour/mono mode control
  • Quick camera up/down select

What Can't it Do ?

As we have previously discovered the 22D inherits many of the 77D's functionality and features. What it does not have, however, as it was designed to be exclusively a 'User' keyboard as opposed to a 'System' keyboard, is ZoneVu configuration capabilities.

Here is a summary with respect to the ZVK-77D.

  • ZoneVu system configuration E.G. ZVR telemetry receivers/ video matrices
  • Inter-site operation i.e. it is limited to local site operation only
  • PCI support
  • Some camera control functions E.G. PWS
  • Control of Sequence patterns
  • Timeout overrides
  • Menu screen layouts
  • Monitor/camera re-mapping

Comparisons with the ZVK-002D
For those of you who are intending to replace either the ZVK-001D or ZVK-002D with the new ZVK-22D here is list ZVK-002D features not supported on the ZVK-22D.
  • Camera/Monitor Locking
  • Camera Access Restrictions
  • Site Control
  • Trunk Control
  • Receiver/Matrix Setup
  • 2 Levels of User Access (1 on the ZVK-22D)
  • Dome Functions - Auto Flip and Proportional camera speed On/Off
  • Some Mux controls - Activity Enable/Disable, Hold On/Off, Zoom

Most of the above functions are now taken care of in the ZSC-xxx Site Controller. In the case of the dome functions, most domes have now developed to support these features themselves, and with respect to the other functions such as Site Control, these facilities can be found on the ZVK-77D.

Living with the ZVK-22D

A poorly designed keyboard may not be that apparent to the engineer who installed and configured it, but to the CCTV operator who has to live with it everyday a badly designed keyboard would soon impact on their performance and even maybe their health.

That's why when Meyertech's ZoneVu development team were tasked with designing a new keyboard to replace the ZVK-001D and 002D keyboards, the needs of CCTV operators were always at the forefront of their thinking from reducing the risk of RSI through ergonomic design to ensuring the keyboard was equally suitable for both right and left-handed operators.

How Green are you ?

If you are one of those people who cares about the environment (and you know you should be) then you will be pleased to know that the ZVK-22D has all the right credentials to ensure it is an environmentally sound proposition; CE compliant, RoHS compliant and WEEE compliant.
